Discord's 20MB Limit: What the 10MB Tutorials Get Wrong
Search results still contain years of instructions claiming that a free Discord account can upload only 10MB. Those answers described an older policy, not the standard limit in 2026. Discord raised the Free attachment allowance from 10MB to 20MB in August 2026, while keeping Nitro Basic at 50MB and full Nitro at 500MB. That change matters because a current Free user normally does not have to squeeze every clip below the old number.
Why old advice keeps appearing
Forum posts, cached snippets, and videos are rarely rewritten when a platform changes its rules. A guide can therefore be technically accurate for its publication date and misleading today. Check the date and compare the claim with Discord's current File Attachments FAQ. Discord can also test different limits for selected users, so the number displayed in your own client remains the final check.
Ten megabytes is now a conservative target
Compressing to 10MB is not wrong; it simply creates a file well below the current 20MB Free ceiling. Think of it as a safe historical target rather than a requirement for every free account. If your only goal is to send one ordinary video from a standard Free account, the 20MB option on the main Discord compressor usually preserves more detail.
Why Compress to 10MB Instead of 20MB
A smaller target still has practical uses. It can make a transfer faster, satisfy a shared workflow, and remove uncertainty when the sender does not know which rule or platform will be used later. The tradeoff is quality: fitting the same duration into half as many megabytes gives the encoder fewer bits for each second of picture and sound.
When someone specifically requests 10MB
A moderator, support form, classroom portal, or teammate may impose its own 10MB cap even when Discord allows more. In that situation, follow the destination's requirement. A 10MB copy is also useful if a file may be forwarded to an older system or archived alongside assets that follow a fixed size convention. Keep the original video separately so the smaller delivery copy is not your only master.
Extra headroom and multiple attachments
Aiming below the maximum avoids failures caused by rounding, container overhead, or a limit shown differently across interfaces. Smaller files also complete sooner on slow mobile connections. If you plan to send several clips, Discord still evaluates each attachment individually, and message-level attachment counts can apply. Prepare each file separately; our guide to compressing video files for Discord explains a reliable multi-file workflow.
How to Compress a Video to 10MB for Discord
The tool above is preset for 10MB, so there is no bitrate calculation or export menu to configure. It measures the clip's duration, budgets space for audio and MP4 overhead, and encodes toward the requested target on your device.
Choose the best source file
Select the original MP4, MOV, WebM, AVI, or MKV whenever possible. Recompressing a copy that has already been heavily reduced compounds visible artifacts. After choosing the file, confirm that the badge says “Target: under 10MB.” The phrase compress video to 10MB for Discord describes the goal, but the encoder deliberately leaves a little room rather than trying to produce an exact 10.00MB result.
Keep the browser open during encoding
Press “Compress to 10MB” and leave the tab active. ffmpeg.wasm performs the work locally, so closing the page stops the process; the video is never uploaded to our server. Long or high-resolution recordings need more memory and time. If a very long clip becomes too soft at 10MB, trim it into focused parts or use the current 20MB Free target instead.
Download, review, and attach the new copy
When processing finishes, download the Discord-ready MP4 and play a few sections before sending it. Attach that new file in Discord, not the larger source with a similar name. For platform-specific steps on desktop, mobile, and Discord Web, continue with the step-by-step compression tutorial. It covers where downloads appear and why a mobile browser should remain in the foreground.
